Nook Reed

October 12, 1925 — June 5, 2011

Alton Edwin "Nook" Reed, age 85, of 207 Possum Ridge Road in Canton passed on Sunday, June 5, 2011, at his residence. Nook was a lifelong resident of Haywood County, formerly from Martin, Georgia. He was the son of the late James Earl and Eula Reed. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, James and Earnest Reed. He retired from Champion International with 40 years of service as a machine foreman on #20 machine, where he loved to spoil his workers with lots of fried trout meals with all the fixings. He was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II and was a member of Crestview Baptist Church. Nook was known as one of the old timer fisherman who loved to fly fish, tie his own flies that no one else could figure out his secrets on how he tied them, loved to eat rainbow trout, collect Indian artifacts, growing his unusual flowers and tomatoes, and his love for his church. He has taught some of his talent of tying fishing flies and Indian artifacts collecting to his youngest daughter, Edwina in hoping that the tradition will carry on. He also loved to show his fishing talents, and his favorite fishing spots to his special grandson, Willie Blazer. He loved going to the lake house in Hiawassee, Georgia with his wife where they have spent many years earlier fishing, boat riding, long walks around the lake, swimming, but most of all spending special times with his wife sitting on the front porch with a cup of coffee in the mornings, looking over the lake and remembering the special times in their lives and how blessed they have been. Nook was also known as the gentle caring person who loved to help other people out. He never met a stranger. He loved to tell stories about the Cherokee Indians and his adventures in his life. He was a kind, loving, and generous person who warmed the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by many. He is survived by the love of his life of 64 years, his wife, Nancy Ann Cagle Reed; two daughters, Edwina Ann Reed of Canton and Kathey Reed Blazer of Pensacola FL; two boys; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-granddaughter on-the-way; a special adopted granddaughter, Brenda Moore; a brother, Melvin Reed and wife, Frieda Reed, of Houston, TX; and a sister, Marylou Caldwell and husband, Dennis Caldwell, of Canton. He also has a special lap buddy, his grand-dog Miss Miley who he loved deeply and she will deeply miss her "PAPAW". Nook along with his wife lived with their daughter, Edwina who was a very special caregiver to both of them. Words can never say enough on how much we love and appreciate everything she has done for us and for the continuing of care giving to Nancy. She was sent to us from Heaven. Also, a special thank you to our other loving daughter, Kathey, who has made numerous trips from Florida to help out with the care when she could and never a day has went by that she didn't call us to see if we are okay or just to say a friendly hello. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Wells Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Canton is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, Nook and the family have requested that a donation be made to your favorite charity, Haywood County Meals on Wheels, 488 East Marshall Street, Waynesville, NC 28786, Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721, or to Crestview Baptist Church, 3258 Pisgah Drive, Canton, NC 28716
