"Nook" Cook

"Loving Husband, Father & Grandfather" Canton – Hilliard Sherrill "Nook" Cook, age 89, of the Dutch Cove community, passed away on Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at his residence surrounded by his family. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Roy Carroll and Nova Ardell Clontz Cook. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Ray Cook. Affectionately known as "Nook," he retired from American Enka in 1984 with 42 years of service. He was an active and supportive member of Morning Star United Methodist Church where he took care of many behind the scene details helping the church run smoothly and ringing the bell at the appropriate hour. He was known for his attention to the smallest detail and enjoyed collecting facts and information on just about anything and kept daily records of the weather and weekly church attendance. Nook enjoying hunting for "mayfries" and picking huckleberries on Shining Rock. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid gardener and fly fisherman and will be remembered for giving out his favorite chocolate candy to all his friends and family. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Joe Clark Cook; two daughters, Marie Cook Irving of Charlotte and Kathy Cook Clinard and her husband, Weldon, of Canton; one sister, Eva Lou Breece of Canton; one brother, Bill Cook and his wife, Frances, of Canton; and three grandchildren, Graham Weldon Clinard of Atlanta, Georgia, Kate Irving and Lisa Sherrill Irving both of Charlotte. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Morning Star United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. Bert Blomquist officiating. Burial will follow at Morning Star Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at Wells Funeral Home in Canton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Morning Star United Methodist Church Music Fund, 2535 Dutch Cove Road, Canton, NC 28716 or to MedWest-Haywood Hospice, Palliative Care, 127 Sunset Ridge, Clyde, NC 28721.
