Mary Calhoun

Waynesville-Mary Chattie Calhoun, age 91, of Givens Estates of Asheville, passed away peacefully Saturday Morning, May 5, 2007 following a period of declining health. She was born on December 19, 1915 in Perry, Florida to the late Reverend Eugene Clayton Calhoun, Sr. and Gussie Barnes Calhoun. In addition to her parents, her brother, Ashley Barnes Calhoun, and two nephews preceded her in death. She was a graduate of Florida Southern College, Class of 1939. She did graduate work at Scarritt College, Nashville, TN and received a Master's Degree from Boston University. After teaching elementary school for five years in Lake City, Florida, she accepted a position as Director of children's work for the Florida Conference of the Methodist Church. She later became an Early Childhood Specialist for the Board of Discipleship of the United Methodist Church in Nashville, TN and authored books and materials for teachers of young children. She was recognized for distinguished service by a number of ecclesiastical organizations. In 1968, Florida Southern College recognized her as a distinguished alumna with an "Outstanding Service to Mankind" award. Following retirement to Waynesville, NC, she was active in Waynesville First United Methodist Church, especially in the music program as a member of the handbell choir. After moving to Given's Estates in 1997, she served two terms as president of the Residents Council and as a member of the Board of Directors. Survivors include her sister, Rabun Calhoun Chappell of Orange Park, Florida and her brother, Dr. E. Clayton Calhoun of Givens Estates; one niece; five nephews; and several grand nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the Pulliam Chapel of Givens Estates at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, May 11, 2007 with Reverend Joe Fulk, Jr. officiating.
