Mary Webb

July 2, 1919 — November 25, 2008

Waynesville, Mary Cady Webb passed on to her Heavenly Father Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at Hospice House in Savannah, Georgia. She was born on July 2, 1919 to Adam Alonza and Ada Starling Cady in Hahira, Georgia. In February of 1945, she married Earl Grey Webb, Sr. in Valdosta, Georgia and shortly thereafter moved to Pompano Beach, Florida. It was there in 1947, she started a small children's shop that later was expanded into Mary Webb's, Pompano's first ladies-ready-to-wear store. From that small store front, she grew the business into what would eventually become a multi-store venture, including a complete ladies department store, a bridal shop, gift shop, and two additional specialty stores in the Oceanside Shopping Center and the Royal Palm Plaza, in Boca Raton. Her business success gave her the opportunity to give back to her community through the Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce, becoming the first woman elected to the board of directors. Although a business pioneer in Pompano Beach, she above all cherished her relationship with her Lord and church family at First United Methodist Church in Pompano Beach, where she served on the Administrative Board, Board of Missions and Evangelism, and along with her husband, served as counselors for the Methodist Youth Fellowship. During her retirement years, she enjoyed her home and friends in Waynesville, North Carolina. After the passing of her husband, she moved to Savannah Square, Savannah, Georgia where she was a member of the Skidaway United Methodist Church. She is survived by two sons, E.Grey Webb and his wife, Meri, of St. Augustine, Florida and Lee Webb and his wife, Donna, of Virginia Beach, Virginia; eight grandchildren, Charlotte Schwartz (Paul) of Atlanta, Vanessa (Kenji) Tsumura of Tokyo, Japan, Wesley Webb of Charlottesville, Virginia, 1st Lt. Lee Webb Jr. of Fort Benning, Georgia, Lane (Adam) Gunter of Tallahassee, Florida, and Midshipman First Class Trip Webb of US Merchant Marine Academy; and three great grandchildren, Carl, Violet, and Camp. Additionally she is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, among them is her beloved namesake, Dr. Mary Cady of Savannah, Georgia. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 1, 2008 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Dr. W. Lyn Sorrells officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. Memorials may be made to one's favorite church or charity.
