Margaret Edwards

Margaret M. Edwards, beloved wife of the late Ernest O. Edwards, cherished mother of Ernie and wife Penny, Cathy and husband Kevin Cantwell; devoted and loving grandmother of Matt and Sally Edwards, Kevin Todd Cantwell, Michaela and husband Tony Hall; and adored sister Georgia Green, died Sunday, April 4, 2010. Born July 13, 1909 to Sallie and Furman Martin. She was a native of Ware Shoals, S.C. She began her work as a registered nurse after graduating from Anderson South Carolina School of Nursing in 1934. As a supportive and dedicated wife, she worked side by side with her husband at Garrett Funeral Home for 60 years. In 1964, the couple took ownership of the firm and continued to remain active until their retirement in 1993. Margaret would never let a little thing like age get in the way of living. She lived independently and alone at her home at Lake Junaluska until she was 96. She lived a full life to the finish supporting her church, her husband's career and celebrating the lives and adventures of her grandchildren. Her hands were never idle. She was an avid reader and always had her tatty shuttle or yarn and needles within reach. Her true passion was working in her yard. She was a gardener who was always delighted and considered it the highest of compliments when her neighbors asked for a cutting of one of her plants. She was a loving friend to many. Her accumulation of friends along the way demonstrated her ability to become involved in others' lives. She resided in Marietta, Georgia with her daughter and family for the past four years. Even when the younger neighborhood children visited, they were always enthralled by the stories of her childhood. Her joyous enthusiasm and graceful sense of humor kept her spirit refreshed. She truly was a lady who possessed a strong southern elegance of grace and charm. Her bright smile and blue, blue eyes were a welcomed sight for all who knew her. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Waynesville and demonstrated her love for children by working in the church's nursery for over 50 years. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 8, 2010 in the Chapel of Waynesville First Baptist Church with Reverend Dr. Robert Prince officiating. Entombment will follow at the Garrett Hillcrest Mausoleum. Family will receive friends from 12:15 until 1:45 p.m. at the chapel prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Healthfield Hospice, 1395 South Marietta Parkway, Suite 902, Marietta, GA 30067.
