Louise Hodges

Lake Junaluska, Louise Lineberry Hodges, age 90, of Sleepy Hollow Drive, passed away on Thursday, January 24, 2013 at her residence. Mrs. Hodges was born in Strasburg, Virginia, and was the daughter of the late Edgar Columbus and Mary Elizabeth Baker Lineberry. At the age of 20 she lost her husband, David Lee Smith, in World War II. She and her husband Ralph were married for 49 years before he passed away in 1998. They spent their marriage in many cities, Greensboro, Burlington, Wilmington, Dayton, Ohio, Macon, GA, and Tallahassee, Florida before retiring to Lake Junaluska in 1995. Louise was a strong community volunteer throughout her life, wherever she lived. In Burlington, she volunteered many hours for the Mental Health organization there. As her children grew up, she served as the leader of their Brownie and Girl Scout troops. She was the sponsor of their cheerleading squads and at one point made every cheerleading uniform for the squad. She and Ralph led the Methodist Youth group for their church in Burlington, NC for many years. She was an avid bridge player, intended to win every hand, and was an active participant in two ongoing card groups. Her other avocation was the research and collection of vintage dolls. For a number of years she exhibited her collection at the Lambeth Inn during the Christmas season. Louise was a founding member of the Junaluska Jewels in the Red Hat Society and served as their Queen Mother. The Red Hat Society is the largest social women's organization in the world with the goal to create social activities and bonding for women over fifty. Louise was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Waynesville. She was an active member of the Home Bound Ministry, and was in the United Methodist Women's Organization's Lydia Circle. She was also a member of The Junaluskans and served as its Membership Secretary. Louise was strong, spiritual and independent, much loved for her wisdom and spirit of generosity, and most of all her love of life. Louise loved her family dearly. She was to celebrate her 91st birthday on April 19th. She is survived by four children, David Hodges and his wife, Barbara, of Tampa, Florida; Claire H. Burdett and her husband, Ed, of Oakland, California, Beth H. Carson and her husband, Jim, of Saluda, NC and Laurie H. McRae and her husband, David, of Augusta, Georgia. One brother, Dee Lineberry and his wife, Mabel, of Raleigh survive her. She leaves behind ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, with whom she was close and who will all miss her very much. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Lake Junaluska Memorial Chapel with her son Reverend David Hodges officiating. The music will be provided by her nephew Robert Sullivan. The family will receive friends following the service in the Susan Todd Lounge adjacent to the Chapel.
