Jennie Fer

December 25, 1917 — November 8, 2011

Waynesville, NC, Jennie Fer 93, died on November 8, 2011 and as in so much of her life, she went fighting. Jennie, "Jadza" was the survivor of Auschwitz, and Bergin- Belsin Concentration Camps. She was married to her husband of 73 years, Bennie and they survived the Lodz Ghetto, the murder of their first born, the obliteration of both their families and their culture, and separation at Auschwitz. Jennie Fer's strength and determination, belief and fortitude allowed her to find her husband after Liberation. They resumed building their lives together and came to the US in 1949. Mrs. Fer was a consummate seamstress. These skills saved her and her husband's lives many times while they did slave labor for the Third Reich. Jennie brought her skills to the USA where she first worked doing piece work and then as a shop foreman and teacher at her job. She was a proud member of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers Union of America until her retirement. Jennie knew how to move skill into artistry and nothing gave Jadza more pleasure than sewing after her work was done, that is nothing except cooking. Her talent as a cook was well known throughout her community. Gefelta fish, kugel, latkes, ztimmes, kneidlach, chopped liver, stuffed cabbage, brisket, pickled herring, apple cake, sponge cake, cookies, or hamantashen, Jennie made it all from scratch and made it well. Jennie passed on Election Day, as the polls were closing. She loved to vote and understood first hand that it was a right not always given and never free. Jennie will be missed for her tenacity, her strong will, her unending love, her sponge cakes and pleated skirts. She is survived by her son Mo, his spouse Kim of Waynesville; Jennie's daughter, Carole, and her spouse, Ellen, of Deer Isle, Maine; and grandchildren, Isaac and Laura, also of Maine. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 11, 2011 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Rabbi Debbie Winston officiating. The family will receive friends following the services at the funeral home and a reception will follow at Bocelli's Restaurant in Waynesville. Memorials may be made to The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, 100 Raoul Wallenberg PL, SW, Washington, DC 20024.
