James Smith

James Doyle "J. D." Smith, age 72, died on Monday, December 5, 2011, at his residence. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Thurman Sanders and Jessie Mae Fitts Smith. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Ann Russell Smith, who died in 2007; and two brothers, George and Melvin Smith. He retired from Haywood Regional Medical Center. James enjoyed collecting clocks and calendars. He was a United States Navy veteran. He is survived by a daughter, Donna Caldwell and her husband, Ned, of Canton; two sons, James Gregory Smith and his wife, Melissa, of Candler, and Keith Smith of Canton; and five grandchildren, Tanner Bryant and Brittany Starr Smith, Brian and Jessie Smith, and Brandon Caldwell. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 8, 2011, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Keith Clark officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3:00 until 4:00 p.m. prior to the service.
