Iona Fie

July 11, 1918 — January 2, 2011

Waynesville, Iona Waldroop Fie, age 92, passed away on Sunday, January 2, 2011 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Macon County, she had lived most of her life in Haywood County and was the daughter of the late Jake and Bertha Nicholson Waldroop. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Fie, who died in 1980; one daughter, Betty Jo Nichols; two brothers, Lloyd and Dover Waldroop; and one sister, Ruth Burch. Iona enjoyed a long retirement and loved tending to her flowers and visiting with her neighbors and family. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Waynesville and a member of the WHO Group She is survived by two daughters, Rita Fie of Nashville, Tennessee and Barbara Woody and her husband, Larry, of Maggie Valley; one son, Ronnie Fie, also of Nashville; and son-in-law, Tommy Nichols of Waynesville. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 5, 2011 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Eddie Nichols officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. prior to services. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain Projects, 2251 Old Balsam Road, Waynesville, NC 28786.
