Hugh Kuykendall

July 25, 1940 — November 9, 2011

Hugh Kuykendall, age 71, of 51 Berthas Spring Lane, died on Wednesday, November 9, 2011, at Mission Hospitals – Memorial Campus. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Vaughn and Martha Cogburn Kuykendall. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Kuykendall, who died in October, 2010; and two special aunts, Shang Cogburn and Johnnie Kinsland. Hugh was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. He was a noted tomato farmer for 48 years. He is survived by four daughters, Beverly Farmer and her husband, Jeff, of Canton; Lisa Leatherwood and her husband, John, of Canton, Brenda Cochran and her husband, Sam, of Waynesville, and Barbara Julianne Kuykendall of Canton; four sisters, Patsy Brookshire and her husband, James of Severn, MD, Lillian Creasman and her husband, Charles, of Pisgah Forest, Katrina Cobb and her husband, Earl, of Canton and Mary Lou Singleton and her husband, Daryl, of Killen, AL; a aunt, Liz Wyatt; six grandchildren, Amber Turner and her husband, Jason, Kayla Farmer, Stephen and William Leatherwood, and Samuel and Riley Cochran; and the Gamez family, who has worked with him and been a special part of the family for 32 years. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 13, 2011, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Perry Brindley and Reverend Jimmy Burress officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Saturday at Wells Funeral Home of Canton. Pallbearers will be Stephen and William Leatherwood, Samuel and Riley Cochran, Jason Turner, Kevin Creasman, Jason Singleton, Victor and Luis Gamez, and Charles and William Creasman. Honorary pallbearers will be Ray Chambers, Charles Blaylock, a host of cousins and special friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, 261 Dix Creek Road, Canton, NC 28716.
