Howard Smathers

-Howard Smathers, age 83, of 35 Whispering Pines Drive, died Sunday, May 29, 2005 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and the son of the late Cash B. and Clora Mease Smathers. He was also preceded in death by three brothers; Jennings, Jack and Turner Smathers and two sisters; Lucille Reynolds and Mary Henson. Mr. Smathers was a United States Army Veteran serving in World War II. He retired lineman for CP&L and was a member of Pisgah Camping Club for 40 years. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Vivian Henson Smathers, one daughter, Donna S. Fortney and her husband Kim of Canton, two sons, Butch Smathers and his wife Betty and Mike A. Smathers and his wife Carolyn, all of Canton, one sister Kate Crisp of Asheville, 6 grandchildren; Shannon Smathers, Jeff Smathers, Jonathan Fortney, Kimi Larkin and her husband Joe, Heath Samthers and his wife Vicki and Kalam Fortney and his wife Cleta and 7 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2005 at the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services with Reverend Dr. Roy Kilby and Reverend Stacey Hightower officiating. Burial will follow at Long's Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service. Military graveside rites will be conducted.
