Hortensia Schumm

August 23, 1920 — March 28, 2012

Waynesville, Hortensia Pessino "China" Muñoz Schumm, age 91, passed away on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 in Waynesville. A native of Havana, Cuba, and previous resident of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, she was the daughter of the late José Luis and Maria Urbizu Pessino. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Luis Muñoz, who died in 1955, and one brother, Armando Pessino. China worked as a secretary on the US Air Force Base in Cuba during World War II and became a US citizen in 1960. She also worked as an executive secretary for Eller and Company Steamship Lines, Otis Elevator, and for Father Wyatt Brown, Founder of St. Andrews and St. Ann's School in Boca Raton, Florida. China moved to Haywood County in 1985 and was a member of St. Margaret's of Scotland Catholic Church in Maggie Valley. She is survived by her husband of 24 years, David K. Schumm, one daughter, Hortensia "Cheena" Baguer and her husband, François, and a son, Dr. Luis Muñoz and his wife, Millie and two grandsons, Michael and Gregory Muñoz, all of Waynesville.
