Harold Monroe Rice, age 91, of Raleigh and formerly of Canton, passed away on Monday, February 4, 2013 at Universal Health Care in Raleigh.
A native of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Herbert Fanning and Janie Smathers Rice. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Grover Rice. Harold was a member of Beaverdam United Methodist Church and had been very active in the Men's Club of the church. Harold retired from Champion International with 42 years of service and was a worker with the C.C. Camp at Cove Creek. Harold was a Master Mason and a member of the Pigeon River Lodge #386 AF&AM for over 60 years.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Hilda Harkins Rice; a daughter, Lynn Rice Warren and her husband, Scott, of Raleigh; two grandchildren, Taylor and Bailey Warren; one sister, Wilma Cooper of Candler; and one brother, Charles Rice and his wife, Esta, of Canton.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 7, 2013 at Beaverdam United Methodist Church with the Reverend Martha Buff Welch and Reverend Jack Scott officiating. Burial will follow at Beaverdam Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:45 p.m. prior at the church.
