Fred Whitman

August 24, 1922 — February 16, 2012

Waynesville, Fred Whitman, age 89, of Killian Street, passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2012 at MedWest- Haywood. A native of Clinton, SC, he lived in Asheville, NC, before moving to Haywood County in 1960. Fred was the son of the late Dewitt and Maggie Dominick Whitman. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Siler Whitman, who passed away in 1991; and two brothers, Warren and Charles Whitman. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran serving in Europe as master of a tug boat. Fred was the owner of Whitman's Bakery and a member of Maggie Valley United Methodist Church. He was a member of Mt. Hermon Masonic Lodge 0118 Asheville. Birthdays, weddings, and other special events were made even more special by the cakes Fred took great pride in creating for the community. He is survived by two daughters, Linda Howell and her husband, Dale, and Wanda Messer and her husband, Douglas, all of Waynesville; a son, Michael Whitman and his wife, Susan, of Nashville, TN; a sister, Marian Edwards of Chattanooga, TN; two brothers, John Whitman and his wife, Pat, of GA; and James Whitman and his wife, Ruth, of Waynesville; sister-in-law, Phyllis Whitman of Clyde; four grandchildren, LuAnn Howell-Libertore and her husband, Chris; Leigh Ann Van Schaick and her husband, John; Selena Williamson and her husband, Jeff, and Nathan Messer; six great-grandchildren, Eva and Emelia Libertore, Olivia and Liam Van Schaick, and Luke and Kendall Williamson; special friend, Sibyl Reed; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 19, 2012 at Maggie Valley United Methodist Church with Reverend Richard Buff, Reverend Erma Bond and Reverend David Reeves officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Maggie Valley United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 112, Maggie Valley, NC 28751.
