Derris Jenkins

Canton-Derris Jenkins, age 93, died Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. Derris was a native of Macon County and had lived most of his live in Haywood County. He was the son of the late James A. and Sarah Webb Jenkins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Decie Soesbee Jenkins who died in 2002; step-son Earl Lee Lewis and four sisters, Rittie Webb, Ethel Teague, Zelma Moffitt and Sylvia Doutt; two brothers, Morris and Roscoe Jenkins. He retired from Champion International with 41 years of service. He loved fishing, woodworking, and produced beautiful furniture and lamps. Derris was a member of Canton First Baptist Church with perfect attendance for nearly 60 years. He is survived by two step-grandsons, David and Michael Lewis both of Atlanta, GA; two sisters, Bertie Soesbee, of Canton and Christine Pless, of New Elllington, SC , one sister-in-law, Mattie Jenkins, of Canton ; three step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, March 15, 2009 in the Chapel of Wells Funeral Home of Canton with the Reverend Jack Hinson officiating. Burial will follow in Pisgah View Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2:30 until 4:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
