David Smith

Waynesville, David Lee "Hulley" Smith, age 63, of 212 Belleview Road passed away on Tuesday, February 1, 2011. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late John Smith, Sr. and Birdell Love Smith. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Rovena Love; three brothers, Nolie Love, John Smith, Jr., and George Smith; and one niece, Verna Mae Love. He was employed by Champion International for 25 years. David enjoyed listening to gospel music, watching car racing and football and being a Good Samaritan for his community. He is survived by his loving companion of 35 years, Carolyn "Roonie" Moore; stepdaughter, Lynette Moore; son-in-law, Callen "Tater" Scruggs, of Waynesville; son James Guy and companion Lakeisha Alston of Asheville; a daughter, Clory Johnson of Arcola, Mississippi; two step granddaughters, Tyshkia and LeeAnne Scruggs of Waynesville; nephews, Bobby Love of Waynesville and KC Cox of Asheville; close cousin, Esther Gibson, of Waynesville; Goddaughter, Pearl Riley of Clayton, North Carolina; special nieces, Gina Caldwell, Beoncia and Helenia Graham, Syleeta Wallace, all of Waynesville, and Brittanny Cox of Raleigh; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at Dix Hill Cemetery with Evangelist Lessie Williams, Reverend Cleveland Morton, Reverend William Ed Staley, Reverend Walter Bryson and Reverend Harold Collins officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Richard Forney, Thomas Forney, Jr., Tommy Churchwell, Kenneth Cox, Charles Moore, John Burnette, Joe Jackson, and Tom Massie. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. prior to services at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
