Clay Smathers

Michael Clayton "Clay" Smathers, age 28, of 145 Butterfly Place died Wednesday, February 17, 2010. A native of Greenville County, SC, he was the son of Susan Wilkins Smathers and the late Jerry Carroll Smathers. He was also preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Creed and Evelyn Wilkins. He was a former employee of Lowes of Asheville and Sylva, NC. He was a 1999 graduate of Wren High School in Piedmont, SC and received an AA Degree in surveying from Haywood Community College. Clay was in the process of obtaining a construction management degree from Western Carolina University. Clay enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, horseback riding, and spending time with his family. In addition to his mother, he is survived by a brother, Matt Smathers and his wife, Brooke of Newman, GA; a niece, Sadie Smathers of Newman, GA; his paternal grandparents, Frederick and Betty Smathers of Canton; and his fiancée, Megan Hensley. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 21, 2010, at Morning Star United Methodist Church with the Reverend Doug Love officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Wells Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Canton is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Morning Star United Methodist Church Building Fund, 2535 Dutch Cove Road, Canton, NC 28716 or to Morning Star Cemetery Association Trust Fund, P. O.
