Carolyn Brooks

Waynesville, Carolyn Joyce Patton Brooks, age 76, passed away on Monday, August 12, 2013 at The Homestead. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Dwain Carlisle and Christell Hendrix Patton. She was preceded in death by four sisters: Dorothy Patton, Edna Nicholson, Betty Homelius, and Elizabeth "Libby" Edwards. Carolyn enjoyed traveling and "cutting a rug" to bluegrass music often performed by her husband. She was very involved in the Haywood County Democratic Party and worked as a precinct judge for the Haywood County Board of Elections. Carolyn loved everyone and "never met a stranger." Above all, she adored her family and cared deeply for each one. She was also a member of Allens Creek Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Tommy Brooks; a daughter, Joyce Brooks Russell and her husband, Hugh, of Waynesville; one grandson, Joshua Brooks Corn of Portland, Oregon; two sisters, Frances Davin of Daytona Beach, Florida and Grace Mitchell of Waynesville; one brother, Dwain Scruggs and his wife, Yvette, of Waynesville; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
