Carey Greene

December 29, 1937 — April 2, 2015

"1937 – 2015" Candler- Carey Greene, age 77, of Smokey Park Highway, passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2015 at St. Joseph Campus- Mission Hospital. A native of Haywood County and a resident of Buncombe County for most of his life, he was the son of the late Joe and Bertha Sheppard Greene. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Lester Sheppard, Ernest and Marcell Greene; and a sister, Barbara Talley. He was a 1957 graduate of Canton High School and served in the National Guard. Carey was a former employee with Western Southern Life Insurance Company and was a retired sales representative from MDI. He was a very active and involved member of West Asheville Baptist Church. Carey enjoyed gardening, fishing, traveling, camping, sports and especially spending time with his family and friends. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 55 years, Mabel Smathers Greene; their three daughters, Tammy Holbrook and her husband, Steve, and daughter Millie Gore, Angie Davis and husband, Dana, and children Evan Davis (Kimberly) and Alex Davis (Heather), Missie Rutherford and children Daniel Rutherford and Candace Paden (Jesse); brothers, Ward Greene and wife, Freida, Gerald Greene and wife, Becky; and three great-grandchildren, Everleigh Davis, Amelia Paden, and Brantley Davis. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Stan Welch and the Reverend Alex Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Ridgeway Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:45 a.m. until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of the family. Serving as pallbearers will be James Crowder, Ray Hipps, Fred King, John Styles, Bruce Taylor, Marvin Ward, and Horace Yates. Honorary pallbearers will be the Fishers of Men Sunday school class of West Asheville Baptist Church. The family wishes to acknowledge the excellent care and kindness Carey received from the Oncology Floor at St. Joseph and also Cancer Care of WNC.
