Bessie Conklin

Maggie Valley, Bessie Mayford Whitehead Conklin, passed away on Monday, March 28, 2011 at her residence. She was born and lived in Passaic County, New Jersey before moving to Haywood County in 1989. She was the daughter of the late Daniel and Elizabeth Corter Whitehead. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, John Space Conklin, who died in 1993, as well as two brothers and two sisters. Bessie was very artistic and was known for her love of gardening and painting. She was an active member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and was a wonderful mother and grandmother, who cherished all her family relationships. She is survived by two sons, David Conklin and his wife, Patricia, of Clyde and Robert Conklin and his wife, Stacey, of Vernon, New Jersey; five daughters, Dorothy Wink and her husband, Edward, of Vernon, New Jersey, Lois Richards and her husband, Carl, of Matamoras, Pennsylvania, JoAnn Puckett and her husband, Richard, of Clyde, Mary Strader and her husband, Austin, of Maggie Valley, and Louann Ellsworth and her husband, Francis, of Silver Creek, Georgia; one sister, Mary Jane Fletcher of Kinnelon, New Jersey; one brother, Daniel Whitehead of New Jersey; 23 grandchildren; 45 great grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 31, 2011 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Harry Worley officiating. Burial will follow at Shepherd Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 4:30 until 6:00 p.m. prior to services at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church, 107 Weaver Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
