Bernie Mock

July 30, 1921 — June 8, 2012

Waynesville, Bernard "Bernie" Angell Mock, age 90, of Little Mountain Road, passed away on Friday, June 8, 2012. A native of Boonville, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Earl Delmer and Jettie Angell Mock and was also preceded in death by one brother, John Delmer Mock. Bernie attended NC State University and UNC Chapel Hill where he was captain of the basketball teams. He later retired as manager from Southern Bell with 30-years service. Bernie was very community-minded and served as past president of the Waynesville Rotary, Hazelwood Boosters and the Chamber of Commerce. He also loved to travel and was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves and the NC State Wolf Pack Team. Bernie became a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Waynesville, where he served as Deacon, sang in the choir, and enjoyed visiting the homebound. He will always be remembered by his church family for his warm handshake and smile. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mary Lou Holleman Mock; three daughters, Brenda Kirkpatrick and her husband, Weaver, of Waynesville, Deborah Mock Foster of Marietta, Georgia, and Melanie Bowles and her husband, Chris, of Salisbury, North Carolina; seven grandchildren, Kirk Kirkpatrick and his wife, Wanda, Angell Benson, Mary Curtis McCracken and her husband, Luke, Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick, Bernie Hampton and his wife, Jaime, Joanna Hampton, and Michael Bowles; nine great-grandchildren, Kirklin, Weaver, and Foster Kirkpatrick, Jett Benson, Lenna Kate and Hart McCracken, and Elijah, Ethan, and Breanna Hampton; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 in the First Baptist Church of Waynesville Sanctuary with Reverend Dr. Robert Prince, Reverend Dr. Dick Maples, and Reverend Dr. Gary Hearon officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers will be Weaver Kirkpatrick, Kirk Kirkpatrick, Weaver Kirkpatrick IV, Bernie Hampton, Chris Bowles, Michael Bowles, and Luke McCracken. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Cook, Mike Gordon, Tom Roberts, Paul Rathbone, Don Ezell, Ken Stahl, Bill Owen, Joe Taylor, Stuart Harley, and John McCracken. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. prior to services at the church. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Waynesville, P.O. Box 690, Waynesville, NC 28786.
