Allen Boone

Waynesville, Allen Boone, age 81, passed away at his home on Saturday, March 29, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Roberts H. and Maria Crymes Boone and was also preceded in death by a brother, Bill Martin Boone and sister, Joanne Boone Byrd. Allen was a 1951 graduate of Waynesville Township High School and attended North Carolina State University before entering the US Army, where he served in Japan. Allen always enjoyed farming and operated Boone Orchard with his father. In 1966, he began a dairy operation. His son, David, and brother-in-law, Joe Martin, later joined him in the venture. He became an active member of the WNC Dairy Commission and served as director of the Carolina-Virginia Milk Producers Association and as secretary-treasurer of the Haywood County DHIA. He also served in several positions in the Haywood County Farm Bureau, was a director of Farm Credit, and also was a director of the North Carolina Apple Growers Association. Allen was a dedicated charter member of Francis Cove United Methodist Church, where he served faithfully in various capacities of leadership. He is survived by his dear wife of 59 years, Betty Noland Boone; a daughter, Dianne Boone O'Kelley, of Asheville; son, David Allen Boone (Sheila), of Waynesville; five grandchildren, Natalie, Jared and Moriah Boone and Travis and Katelyn O'Kelley; two brothers, Jimmy Boone and Joseph "Buddy" Boone (Bertha); four sisters, Eugenia Boone Jeter (Jim), Sara Boone Martin, Ruth Helen Boone Noland (Bill), Linda Boone Garrett (Tom); sister-in-laws, Quinn Boone (widow of Bill Martin Boone), Mary Noland Tate, and Elsie Green Noland; and one brother-in-law, James Hardy Noland. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at Francis Cove United Methodist Church with Reverend David Childers and Reverend Terry Rowland officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Jared Boone, Travis O'Kelley, Charlie Sims, Chuck Francis, Robert Jeter, and Bob Boone. Honorary pallbearers will be Wade Francis, Perry Morrow, Tom Franklin, Dennis Holder, and Eugene and Gene Christopher. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Monday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. The family would like to give special thanks to the caregivers at The Homestead and also to the Care Angels for their loving care and support. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Francis Cove United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 843, Waynesville, NC 28786 or to MedWest Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
