Obituary for Stuart A. Nanney

"Papaw"

Clyde, Stuart A. Nanney, 82, went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, November 11, 2017 after a three-year battle with a rare cancer.
He was the son of the late Thomas Roland and Carrie Lee Owenby Nanney of Bald Mountain, Buncombe County. He was preceded in death by six brothers; Amiel, Otto, Alfred, Clifford and Bert Nanney, and an unnamed baby, and three sisters; Guyva Nanney, Tressie Davis and Reeda Haynes.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Yvonne Wright Nanney; his daughter, Kathy Ross (Steve) of Crabtree; and his son, Mark Stuart (Tara) Nanney of Kingsport, Tennessee. He also leaves behind one granddaughter, Elisa Nanney, and eight grandsons: Kyle, Brett, Joshua, David and Isaac Nanney and Justin, Daniel and Luke Ross. In addition he is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, in whom he took great pride.
Stuart resided for many years in Henderson County and moved to Haywood County in 2001. He had worked for many years as a computer systems analyst for First Union and BASF as well as doing private consulting work.
He was a proud veteran, serving in the U.S. Army, Army Reserves, and U.S. Naval Reserves. He was called to active duty during Desert Storm. He retired from the Naval Reserves as a senior chief petty officer in 1997. At that time, Rear Admiral Robert Crates called him the “father of CHFMIS.” CHFMIS was a computer program written by Stuart to facilitate navy cargo handling and personnel training nationwide and worldwide. This had significant positive impact on naval operations for years.
Stuart’s faith was very important to him. He served as treasurer, deacon and Sunday school teacher in several Baptist churches. He was an active and proud member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. He was a member of the Haywood West Chapter of Gideons International until health problems prevented his participation.
Stuart was known as a kind, loving family man, always willing to help out a neighbor or friend. He loved his wife passionately. He also loved the outdoors, particularly his beloved home place on Bald Mountain. He also enjoyed gardening, woodworking, genealogy and history. He particularly enjoyed time with his grandchildren, and each of his children and grandchildren were a wonder and joy to him. He will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Wednesday, November 15, 2017, at Rock Springs Baptist Church. The Reverend Charlie Simpson and Reverend Kevin Brooks will preside. Burial will follow at Bald Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery with full military rites. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the service.
The family offers deep gratitude to Trevor Austin, M.D.; Judy Phillips, D.N.P., and Gregory Dray, M.D., who provided exceptional and compassionate care during his illness.
Memorials may be made to Rock Springs Baptist Church, 1028 Lost Cove Road, Clyde NC 28721.
