Sam Cody

Candler - Samuel James Cody, 97 passed away on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at John F. Keever Solace Center.

A native of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Lloyd Gus and Leona Stamey Cody. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Calvin Cody, who died in 2002; and a sister, Mildred Lucille Cody Allison. Sam was a United States Marine veteran stationed in the Pacific as Staff Sergeant. He attended North Carolina State University and studied engineering. Sam enjoyed woodworking, gardening, stain glass, and stamp collecting. He retired from Champion International with 36 years of service and was a member of Oak Forest Presbyterian Church in Asheville. Sam was also a member of Pigeon River Masonic Lodge #386 AF&AM and Canton VFW Post 5198.

He is survived by two sons, David Michael Cody and his wife, Kathy, and Sam Calvin Cody and his wife, Sandy; two grandsons, Dr. David Mark Cody and his wife, Rebecca, and Dr. Christopher Andrew Cody and his wife, Oksana; and twin great-granddaughters, Michaela Benton and Carrie Katherine Cody.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, 2018 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend David Morgan officiating. A private burial will be held at Locust Field Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. Military honors will be conducted by the Marine Corp.
