Reeves Ferguson

July 2, 1926 — May 2, 2018

"1926 - 2018"

Clyde, Reeves Ferguson, 91, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 2, 2018.

A native of the Fines Creek Community, Reeves was the son of the late Samuel Whip and Fannie Jane McCrackin Ferguson. He was also preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. Reeves was born on July 2, 1926 and spent his early days tending farm. After his marriage, he spent several years working in road construction before being employed by Champion International Paper in Waynesville where he retired after 30 years of service. Even after he started his career at Champion, Reeves continued to farm, raise cattle, and to work in his community and for his family. He would often show up to help his neighbors when it was harvest time or a project needed to be completed, pitching in to help often before being asked. Reeves assisted his father-in-law, Fletcher Brown, build a home for himself and his wife. Years later he did the same for both of his children. He also built a cabin near Maple Springs in Madison County using mostly reclaimed materials at a time when the word "upcycling" was not well known. Reeves loved to spend his days off from Champion at the cabin that he named "Birch Holler" and sharing it with friends and showing his children and grandchildren different species of plants, trees and animal tracks. He was a strong man and a jack-of-all trades. Reeves was a rock mason, carpenter, craftsman, farmer and a man who truly lived by his faith. He was a devout Christian and long-time Deacon of Fines Creek Memorial Baptist Church.

Reeves is survived by his wife of 69 years, June Ferguson; a daughter, Nancy Davis and husband, Joe of the Iron Duff community; a son, David Ferguson of the Crabtree community; a daughter-in-law, Beth Reeves Ferguson; two sisters, Margaret Daniel of Richmond, Virginia and Cenie Rogers also of Crabtree; a granddaughter, Cara Rogers and husband Rodney of Iron Duff; a grandson, Andy Ferguson and wife Jessica of Marion; three great-grandsons, McGuire, McClain and Walker Rogers also of Iron Duff; and a special caregiver and friend, Joann Green.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at Fines Creek Memorial Baptist Church with Reverend Jimmy Moore officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church beginning at 12:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Fines Creek Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery Maintenance Fund, c/o James Ferguson, 11571 Betsy's Gap Road, Clyde, NC 28721.

Special thanks is given to the members of the Fines Creek Volunteer Fire Department for their long time support and assistance.
