Obituary for Jerry Smathers

Canton – Jerry Thomas Smathers, age 82, passed away on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at The Homestead.

A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Herbert and Agnes Lindsey Smathers. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Shipman Smathers, who passed away in 2001 and a brother, Ansel Smathers. Jerry enjoyed hunting, fishing, carpentry, and most of all loved his family. He was a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church.

He is survived by two daughters, Tammy Creasman and her husband, Danny, of Waynesville and Deloris Cochran and her husband, Jeff, of Canton; a son, Thomas “Tommy” Smathers of Canton; a sister, Bennie Jo Sutton and her husband, Bill, of Canton; a brother, Larry Smathers of Canton; 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at Beaverdam Baptist Church with Reverend Gene Worley and Reverend Phillip Wyatt officiating. Inurnment will follow the service at Beaverdam Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
