Obituary for Elsie Green Noland

Raleigh, Elsie Green Noland, 89, died August 8, 2018. She was the daughter of Marion Carlise Green, Sr. and Ruth Carraway Green. Elsie graduated from Waynesville Township High and Woman’s College of UNC in Greensboro with a degree in home economics. She married E. Jack Noland in 1951 and raised four children in Haywood County before moving to Oxford, Ohio, in 1967 for Jack’s job with Champion Papers in Hamilton, Ohio.

Jack tragically died in a car accident in 1970 and Elsie moved her four children back to Waynesville where they would benefit from the extensive family support they had left three years earlier.

With four children to put through college, Elsie returned to college herself and earned her Master’s Degree in education from Western Carolina University. She taught many years with Haywood County Public Schools and successfully put four children through college as a single mom with the support of family and friends.

Elsie loved her children unconditionally. She was an accomplished seamstress outfitting her eight granddaughters with heirloom smocked dresses. When her two grandsons visited, they looked forward to target range shooting in the pasture with the BB gun she kept in the back bedroom closet. She had the BB gun to scare the squirrels away from her beloved bluebirds. Elsie was also an accomplished gardener as evidenced by her beautiful flower beds that continue to bloom every spring.

Elsie was a living example of how to help others. Whether to aging family members or to sick friends, Elsie would call or go visit to see what she could do to help. She was a natural volunteer for the Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary logging over 7000 hours of service! Elsie was a member of Maple Grove United Methodist Church and served faithfully in Women’s Society later to be known as United Methodist Women.

As dementia claimed more and more of Elsie’s memories and ability to live independently, she moved to Raleigh in 2008 to Brighton Gardens of Raleigh, a Sunrise Senior Living Community.

Surviving are her four children: Cathy (Richard) Dupre, of Cohutta, GA, Mick (Karen) Noland, of Fayetteville, Bill (Pam) Noland, of Wilmington, and Ruth (Stuart) Jones, of Raleigh along with nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Also surviving are her sisters-in-law who were definitely family in every sense of the word: Mary Noland Tate and Betty Noland Boone.

Elsie was predeceased by her husband, Jack Noland, and granddaughter, Suzie Jones, her parents, her three older brothers; her younger sister, Ann G. Medford; and her brother-in-law, Hardy Noland.

Elsie drew strength from her faith in God. Romans 5:3-5 was underlined in her Bible and talks of the hope drawn from God in times of suffering. “Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom He has given to us.”

Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at Maple Grove United Methodist Church. Private family burial service will be held at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Honorary Pall Bearers will be Alan Medford, Mike “Whitey” Medford, Jim Tate, Mark Noland, and David Boone.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Maple Grove United Methodist Church, 79 Maple Grove Church Rd., Waynesville, N.C. 28786.

The care of Mrs. Noland has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Homes and an online memorial register is available at “Obituaries” at www.wellsfuneralhome.com
