Waynesville, On Friday, March 23, 2018, our community lost a man of great honor, Winton Holmes "Andy" Anderson. Andy passed away peacefully at The Homestead (Haywood Hospice) at the age of 97.

Andy was born in Clay County, the son of the late Edgar Lee and Adeline Winchester Anderson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rebecca Williamson Anderson, who passed away 2011. He and Rebecca were blessed with 64 years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by four sisters, Alwayne Knight, Norine Bova, Kathleen Allison and Clyta Taylor; and two brothers, Guy and Harold Anderson.

Andy was a 1936 graduate of Hayesville High School. He attended North Carolina State University and then enlisted for service in the United States Army Air Corp. In serving his country, Andy taught instrumentation to student military pilots at Yale and The University of Illinois. Following his military service, Andy moved to Wendell, North Carolina where he was an employee of Universal Chevrolet. In 1955, he purchased South Gran Chevrolet in Creedmor, North Carolina and later sold the business in 1960. At that time, he moved to Waynesville where he founded the Anderson Chevrolet and Oldsmobile dealership. Andy enjoyed a long and successful career as an automotive dealer until his retirement in 1984. Andy was a very active member of Waynesville First Baptist Church where he taught Sunday-School and served on numerous committees. Andy was a member of the Hazelwood Boosters Club, a member of the Waynesville Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow recipient. Andy will always be remembered as an individual with the highest ethical standards and principles and an unwavering example of living a Christian life. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend to all. Duty, God and family were the hallmarks of his life. He believed that if you put in the work and made the sacrifices, your life would improve along with the lives of many of those around you. He did what was right as best he understood what right was. He kept his word. He was concerned about his reputation but cared more about his honor.
